Lake Illawarra is the second largest saltwater lake in NSW Australia located 8 km south of Wollongong on the New South Wales South Coast . Lake Illawarra is a major asset to the Illawarra region for locals and tourists alike. The bike tracks go all around the lake and you can ride along many interesting paths. There are yacht races, speedboat and you can also go camping, caravanning and canoeing but most people prefer swimming. It's a place to go, to relax, ride bikes, boating and many more wonderful things. Lake Illawarra is a semi-enclosed basin where fresh water from surrounding land mixes with sea water brought in by the tides. The resulting mix, known as brackish water, forms an aquatic habitat where environmental conditions are extremely variable. Lake Illawarra is a large tidal, salt water lake with a surface area of 35sq km and a 37km shoreline. The Lake is shallow although over 70 per cent of the lake is navigable. Home to flocks of majestic black swans, pelicans, the royal spoonbill and a host of other water birds.

Wollongong, with a population of over 250 000, is the third-largest city in NSW
and the tenth-largest in Australia. It is situated 81 km south of Sydney via the
Princes Highway within a district known as the Illawarra, WHEN visiting
Wollongong, you will be surprised how much there is available for you to see and
do, and more importantly how easily accessible everything is. Situated just 1
hour's drive South of Sydney's international airport, If it hadn't been for a
heavy surf Captain Cook would have made his first landing in NSW within the
Illawarra, though he did note, in his log book, the attractive appearance of the
shore He also named 'Red Point' (Port Kembla) and 'a round hill top of which
look'd like the Crown of a hatt' (Mount Kembla), subsequently called 'Hat Hill'
by Flinders. Cook continued north and landed at Botany Bay the following day. In
1803 a Captain Nicholls shipped cattle into the Shellharbour district when the
Sydney area was in drought. In 1804 Captain Kent was authorised to explore the
South Coast and botanist Robert Brown also visited the region some time between
1800 and 1805.
Sydney is the most populous city in Australia with a metropolitan area
population of over 4.2 million people (2006). Sydney is the state capital of New
South Wales and is located on the country's south-east coast.
The first European colony in Australia, Sydney was established in 1788 at Sydney
Cove by Arthur Phillip who led the First Fleet from Britain. Built around Port
Jackson, which includes Sydney Harbour, the city of Sydney has been called the "Harbour
City". It is Australia's largest financial centre and is also an international
tourist destination, notable for its spectacular natural setting, beaches, and
the landmarks Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
